GEDC staff in both Esperance and Kalgoorlie-Boulder offices celebrated the contribution of women at International Women’s Day events held on 8 March 2023.

Esperance staff attended the International Women’s Day Luncheon presented by Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where the Esperance Bay Yacht Club saw around 100 women (and a couple gentlemen) come together to hear personal accounts from inspirational local women including Maya Assad (Bluemar), Nicolie Thomas (Mudjar Aboriginal Corporation), Jennifer Obourne (Councillor, Shire of Esperance) and Lesa Blackham (Women’s Empowerment Coach).

Joining a DPIRD organised event, with an introduction by Heather Brayford DPIRD Director General, DPIRD and GEDC staff in the Kalgoorlie office shared an online interactive presentation with Kaley Chu author of '100 Lunches with strangers'. Through her efforts to overcome crippling shyness, Kaley is now a sought-after public speaker and author who encourages others to see their potential, reach out beyond their comfort zone, and seek connections with others. Over 200 DPIRD and Regional Development Commission staff across the state attended the virtual event.

On Friday 11 March, Kalgoorlie staff also attended a Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre breakfast event featuring keynote speakers Sebine Winton Minister for Early Childhood Education; Child Protection; Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence; Community Services; Tracy Vo journalist, author and television presenter, and Goldfield's singer song writer Lynn Hazelton.

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality, with this year's theme being #EmbraceEquity.
