Over sixty participants gathered for the Eastern Goldfields Load Permission Scheme (ELPS) information forum hosted by Western Power in Kalgoorlie last week.

The forum was held to discuss the development of the ELPS and how it works with industry to provide a managed interruptible supply.

The ELPS enabling infrastructure initiative was activated in June 2021.

Presentations were also given by industry users of the ELPS, including mining company Norton Goldfields, providing valuable insight into the practical applications, benefits, and challenges of the scheme.

Lynas Rare Earths Limited, which has secured access to the ELPS for its new rare earths processing facility in Kalgoorlie, shared information about the scheme at the forum.

Lynas announced a new agreement with Western Power to meet its peak maximum power demand of 12MW and average maximum demand of 8.7MW through the ELPS.

The ELPS enables more South West Interconnected System (SWIS) users based in the Eastern Goldfields region to replace non-renewable supply, such as diesel, with options that are greener and more cost-effective.
