A Goldfields Region Electricity Forum was held in Kalgoorlie-Boulder recently, hosted by PoweringWA and the Minister for Energy, Reece Whitby. Attended by GEDC and over eighty local stakeholders, the forum explored opportunities for electricity reliability, sustainability and decarbonisation outcomes in the Goldfields region.
It marked the first major regional engagement about the potential development of a new electricity network – the Goldfields Regional Network (GRN) – to support Western Australia’s energy transition and improve long term power supply in the Goldfields.
Minister Whitby also announced an arrangement with TransAlta to improve access to back up power generation and longer-term plans for power generation in the Goldfields region, aligned to 2030 decarbonisation targets.
The forum was an important first step in bringing together Traditional Owner groups, industry, and government to collaborate on energy solutions for the Goldfields region. FAQs and further information on the GRN project are available here.
