National Reconciliation Week 2023

National Reconciliation Week 2023

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. They commemorate two significant milestones in reconciliation – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

The theme for this year’s NRW is Be a VOICE for Generations. Kalgoorlie and Esperance offices created a display to acknowledge Reconciliation week, utilising resources from Reconciliation WA and staff’s personal books and resources. GEDC staff acknowledged NRW by attending Reconciliation WA’s online virtual breakfast and the online Reconciliation Yarns session.

In Kalgoorlie-Boulder, the Hon. Don Punch, Minister for Regional Development and Kris Starcevich, GEDC CEO attended the Central Regional TAFE Reconciliation lunch, where new signage displaying Aboriginal art and naming was show-cased. Goldfields Aboriginal Business Chamber hosted a Reconciliation luncheon on Friday 2 June, with guest speakers Gavin Wanganeen and Jonathon Griffen. Three GEDC staff attended this event, listening to stories from positive voices for change.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder (CKB) hosted many events during Reconciliation week. GEDC staff were able to attend the Reconciliation week morning tea at the Job Support Hub’s new location launch on Thursday 1 June 2023. Ending the CKB’s week of celebrations was the Reconciliation in the Park which was held at the Lord Forrest Precinct on Friday 2 June 2023. Staff were able to participate in the Community Mural painting, facilitated by First Nations artist Ash Jangala Smith, as well as enjoy the afternoon of entertainment.
