Around 80 people attended a Hydrogen Forum in Esperance earlier this month hosted by the GEDC and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.

The Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC, Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food; Hydrogen Industry, opened the forum, outlining the global and Western Australian opportunities and challenges for the development of a renewable or ‘green’ hydrogen industry.

Produced using renewable energy, a green hydrogen product provides a means to export energy from WA’s abundant solar and wind resources to assist the State’s international trading partners to meet their low-emission energy needs.

It also provides an opportunity to reduce WA’s reliance on imported diesel and has a range of potential applications in the agricultural sector.

The south coast of WA, including the Esperance and Dundas districts, have been identified by industry as potential locations for large-scale green hydrogen production.

Part of the forum included a panel discussion led by local community, business and industry representatives which covered the opportunities and challenges for farmers, traditional owners and landowners to host renewable generation assets, the potential impacts on the local community, infrastructure needs, skills and job opportunities, and new hydrogen applications such as cheaper energy and agricultural inputs.

The GEDC extends its thanks to local community members for participating in the panel discussion and the forum as a positive forum to bring key stakeholders together to discuss this new industry.

If you would like to discuss feedback from the forum, contact Rose or Shane in the Esperance office on 9083 2222.
