Australia‘s most remote rock band, the Desert Stars from Tjuntjuntjara, toured Esperance in October, bringing their unique 1980s inspired rock to strong crowds during a weekend of free events.

The band had a series of events, including a visit to Wongutha CAPS school, a Welcome to Country and community barbecue on the Esperance Foreshore and screening of the documentary film, Gravel Road. Many locals attended the free screening of the award-winning documentary, which follows the story of singer-songwriter Jay Minning, as the Desert Stars embark on their first band tour from their home in Tjuntjuntjara across the Western Desert.

The Desert Stars played to a crowd of more than 250, at a free music event at the Lucky Bay Brewery. Kyron Smithson, from Esperance music production company Kyza Presents, hosted the Desert Stars and said the band was overwhelmed by the success of the weekend’s events.

“They described it as the best show they’ve done anywhere, including shows in Sydney, and were so proud to see such a strong crowd of First Nations and non-Indigenous people come out to the event,” Kyron said.

The weekend’s events were made possible with support from the GEDC, Mt Burdett Foundation and the Federal Government’s Live Music Australia Initiative.
