Goldfields-Esperance Planning for Climate Change Adaptation

Goldfields-Esperance Planning for Climate Change Adaptation

Two engaging climate adaptation workshops were held during March in the Goldfields-Esperance region. Participants from across the region gathered to collaborate and explore the impacts of climate change on the region and potential mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The workshops were funded by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and delivered as an initiative of the Goldfields Voluntary Regional Organisations of Councils (GVROC) Regional Climate Alliance in 2021. The GEDC is a participant in the Alliance and supporter of multiple initiatives.

The GVROC Regional Climate Alliance is developing strategies and is working with key stakeholders to advocate for emissions reduction efforts and to build resilience to climate change impacts, aligned with national objectives for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

A recent Carbon Emissions Baseline Study completed by the Alliance for the Goldfields-Esperance region estimates that the largest source of emissions for the region in 2020 was electricity and gas from the industrial sector (70%), with on-road transport accounting for 13% of emissions and agriculture 9%.

The workshops considered the climate change impacts on local communities, industry and the environment and how business and industry will need to adapt practices to continue to operate efficiently under a range of emissions scenarios.

The next step is to develop a strategy that will prioritise actions for Local Governments to adapt infrastructure and reduce the risks and impacts of bushfire and extreme weather events such as flooding.
