The inaugural Yuwa Aboriginal Business Conference & Expo took place on 11 June 2025 at the Goldfields Arts Centre in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Hosted by the Goldfields Aboriginal Business Chamber (GABC), the Yuwa Conference brought together Aboriginal business leaders, government agencies, and regional stakeholders for a day of collaboration, learning, and knowledge-sharing.
Highlights included an opening performance from Ngadju Dancers and hearing from Stan Grant, Wiradjuri man and Aboriginal Australian journalist about his journey from poverty to travelling the world and now being one of Australia’s most renowned journalists. Stan discussed the challenges he faced growing up as an Aboriginal man and how perseverance and hardwork shaped his life and career.
The conference also heard from Nornie Bero, a First Nations woman from the Komet Tribe of the Meriam people in the Torres Strait and professional chef. Nornie discussed how her upbringing on Country instilled in her a passion for food and culture. Leading her to Melbourne to start Mabu Mabu, a business which aims to make bushfood more accessible and affordable to everyone. Nornie’s entrepreneurial spirit has since led to her expanding into restaurants, cafes, catering and workshops.
Kris Starcevich, CEO, GEDC delivered a presentation, highlighting the critical role of Aboriginal businesses in strengthening the regional economy.
The Yuwa Conference also featured the Stronger Business Expo, which provided a platform for businesses to showcase their products, services and capabilities. The GEDC supported this milestone event and looks forward to ongoing partnerships that promote economic development and prosperity.
