Goldfields-Esperance Regional Drought Resilience Plan

Goldfields-Esperance Regional Drought Resilience Plan

Building Resilience to Drought Through Water Security

The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission has been working closely with Local Government and regional stakeholders to deliver a Regional Drought Resilience Plan.

The Plan presents a coordinated approach to building drought resilience for communities, industries and landscapes – with a specific focus on water security. It has been informed by empirical and anecdotal evidence to ensure this approach is underpinned by a robust evidence base and reflective of the region’s lived experience. This Plan builds on work undertaken by the region for the region and puts forward future focused and practical actions that will increase the region’s preparedness to drought conditions and enable the region to respond proactively to a range of future climate scenarios.

The draft Plan is supported by an assessment of the key drought vulnerabilities across the region. This Drought Vulnerability Assessment reviews the historic and likely future drought-related impacts and the impact on water resources, availability and scarcity across the region. It also includes anecdotal evidence gathered during consultations that identify the region’s lived experience with drought.

Objectives of the Plan

The plan aims to develop practical, locally led actions to enhance drought resilience and preparedness across the Goldfields-Esperance region.

Building on work undertaken with GVROC’s Regional Climate Alliance, the Plan will have a strong focus on driving water security solutions. The plan will identify specific initiatives that can be funded to address regional priorities and capitalise on local opportunities.

Advantage of a Resilience Plan

The plan is expected to promote vibrant and prosperous communities and industries by ensuring they are better prepared for future droughts. The plan will identify a pipeline of fundable initiatives that are regionally focused and address the priorities and opportunities of the Goldfields-Esperance region. By preparing for climate change and dry seasonal conditions we can ensure our communities and industries are vibrant and prosperous well into the future.
